Original Artwork
One of One
Hand-finished with encaustic wax, oils, and pastel
Surface & Process
Each original begins with Susan J. Roche’s underwater photography and is transformed by hand through layers of encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel, and pigment. Built on a 1.5-inch cradled wood panel, the translucent wax allows light to enter the surface and reflect back, creating depth, luminosity, and subtle shifts throughout the day.
Larger work will be created as a new, individually hand-finished original. The composition and atmosphere will remain true to the artwork shown, while variations in color, texture, and surface will give the finished piece its own distinct presence.
About the Work
Juturna was the Roman goddess of springs, wells, and healing waters. The figure rises through pale currents with her arms opened to the surrounding flow, neither resisting nor entirely yielding. Hand-worked passages of white and blue move across the surface like mineral water, giving the piece an elemental and restorative quality.
