About the Work
Inspired by Cymodoce and Panope, two Nereids of Greek mythology, this work evokes companionship, guidance, and the quiet strength found in shared experience. Rather than depicting a specific mythic episode, it draws on the sea nymphs’ enduring association with protection and passage through uncertain waters.
Two figures drift through silvery water, their veils softening the boundary between body, fabric, and sea. The work holds a moment of shared movement and connection.
Surface & Process
Rooted in Susan J. Roche’s underwater photography, the image is developed by hand with encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel, and pigment on a 1.5-inch cradled wood panel. Translucent layers of wax create depth, luminosity, and subtle shifts across the surface.
