About the Work
Named for the mythic Oreithyia, this work moves between water and air, stillness and motion. Her story of being carried away by Boreas, the north wind, lends the image a sense of passage between elements.
The lighter and darker versions hold different moods of the same mythic presence. Each is a distinct original and may be acquired individually.
Surface & Process
Rooted in Susan J. Roche’s underwater photography, the image is developed by hand with encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel, and pigment on a 1.5-inch cradled wood panel. Translucent layers of wax create depth, luminosity, and subtle shifts across the surface.
