About the Work
Panope is one of the Nereids, the sea nymphs of Greek mythology. In this work, she enters that ancient world as a presence shaped by water, movement, and mystery.

The figure seems suspended between stillness and motion. Water softens her outline, creating an image of quiet strength and deep connection to the sea.

Surface & Process
Rooted in Susan J. Roche’s underwater photography, the image is developed by hand with encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel, and pigment on a 1.5-inch cradled wood panel. Translucent layers of wax create depth, luminosity, and subtle shifts across the surface.
