About the Work
Thalira Ascendant evokes a mythic presence rising through the water. The title suggests emergence and transformation: a figure coming into her own, carried upward by the currents around her.

Light, water, and the softened form hold the moment between concealment and revelation.

Surface & Process
Rooted in Susan J. Roche’s underwater photography, the image is developed by hand with encaustic wax, oil paint, pastel, and pigment on a 1.5-inch cradled wood panel. Translucent layers of wax create depth, luminosity, and subtle shifts across the surface.
